Dawson Creek RCMP thwart thieves with assistance from police dog

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Two men were arrested by the Dawson Creek RCMP after a daylight break and enter with the assistance of police dog services and police dog Hamer.

According to the RCMP, on March 3rd at approximately 10:00 a.m. Dawson Creek officers were notified of a break and enter and theft in progress at a rural oil and gas site near One Island Lake.

Police were told the site had also experienced a break-and-enter the day before.

The Dawson Creek RCMP attended the site and found two men who then fled into the surrounding woods.

Police followed the footprints in the snow and managed to locate 36-year-old James Shearer hiding in a nearby shed.

Police Dog Services attended, and police dog Hamer tracked 45-year-old Wayne Conley, who was also arrested.

Further investigation into the incident revealed the two suspects had arrived in a stolen vehicle and caused thousands of dollars in damage to the infrastructure of the well site.

Shearer was charged with break and enter, possession of stolen property, mischief over $5,000, breach of probation and resisting a peace officer.

Both men have several outstanding warrants in Alberta for similar offences.

The Dawson Creek RCMP thanked the well site operators who alerted police to the illegal activity. The detachment also thanked the Police Dog Services and police canine, Hamer.
