‘Seeing the kids progress’ – inspired June’s Pita Pit Teacher of the Month to get into this profession
C.M. Finch Elementary School teacher, Shauna Milne, has been named as June’s Pita Pit’s Teacher of the Month.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A C.M. Finch Elementary School teacher has been named Pita Pit’s Teacher of the Month for June.
Shauna Milne works for School District 60 through Learning Services and teaches fourth and fifth-grade science.
“I work with inclusion services and with kids who have autism,” she added.
Milne has been a teacher for about five years, but started teaching dance when she was very young.
She said that seeing kids progress and reach their full potential inspired her to enter this profession.
“I like to challenge the kids and push them a little bit farther than what they think they can handle, and most of the time they’re able to meet that,” she explained.
Milne’s nomination message read: “She cares so much for all her students and really gives all of them fair and equal treatment.”

“She wants all her students to love what they do and has such a wonderful way to explain things to children. She is encouraging, loving and caring.”
Milne noted the highlight of her career has been getting to know the kids and the families.
“Fort St. John is such a great community. I moved here about 30 years ago from Prince George. It’s a great area to be in, and the support in the area is really great,” she said.
The biggest challenge Milne faced was adapting to change.
She said: “There’s always a new way to do this…so I think always reflecting on my teaching and knowing how to adapt to those changes has been the hardest thing.”
Milne added that her favourite part of teaching is learning new things.
“I’ve had so many different jobs,” she noted. “I think my favourite part is just learning the new things for the new job, just to see what different ways the kids can learn, because it’s not the same for everybody.”
When asked if she has a message for people considering entering this profession, she said, “If you’re interested in teaching, it’s a very fulfilling job.”
“There’s lots of challenges, but meeting those challenges and being able to succeed past them are really important tools to have in your life and I think it’s worth it.”
Congratulations to Shauna Milne, June’s Pita Pit Teacher of the Month.
