Difference between evacuation alert, order

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The variety of evacuation alerts and orders released in the region has caused some confusion among community members.

Several agencies and individuals have shared the difference between the two as a result.

An evacuation order means residents must safely leave the area.

An evacuation alert is meant to act as an advanced notice in case residents are asked to leave their homes immediately, giving them enough time to prepare, such as packing a to-go bag.

Fort St. John is on an evacuation alert, not an evacuation order.

After the alert was issued Monday, Ryan Harvey with the City said it was issued out of “an abundance of caution,” and there is no need for residents to panic. However, they should be prepared to leave on short notice should an evacuation order be issued.
