Fort St. John’s own Passive House opening it’s doors to let public in

Across the street from the home at 9904 94th Street, there is construction going on day in and day out. But inside the quiet, insulated walls of this certified passive house, the noise doesn’t even exist.

The house is airtight, maybe even a bit warm, which is surprising considering it’s the house furthest north in Canada.

The home costed about $363 per ft², more than the average of $250-$350 for the typical Fort St. John home. However, the home makes grand savings on energy – as their usage is essentially non-existent compared to the average house.

“Getting a mortgage is one thing, but being able to operate (the house) is yet another thing,” said Mayor Lori Ackerman. “So when you’ve got a home that puts money back in your pocket, that is important on a monthly basis.”

To accurately measure how this house measures in energy consumption compared to a typical home, a couple has been living in the house since January of this year. Catherine Ruddell and Paul Gillis are that couple.

They are hosting an open house on November 14th and 15th, from noon until 4:00 PM for those curious to take a look.
