VANCOUVER, B.C. – ICBC has announced its temporarily delaying COVID-19 rebate cheques because of a cyberattack.
According to a release from ICBC, the cyberattack was on a third-party vendor contracted to provide the printing and distribution services.
The vendor’s information is limited to customer names, addresses, COVID-19 rebate cheque amounts, and cheque numbers. In the release, ICBC says there is no indication that this information was obtained. The cyberattack did not impact ICBC’s systems, which it says are secure.
ICBC says that ensuring the safety and security of customers’ information is its top priority and actively monitoring the situation with the vendor. ICBC will also be working with the Office of the Information, and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (OIPC) in the event information has been obtained.
The rebate cheques were planned to be sent out starting this week, but these plans have been put on hold.
ICBC says that as of March 17th, no cheques were issued and is optimistic the delay will be small. The corporation is currently working on options to issue cheques to customers in the coming weeks.
