CHETWYND, B.C. — Growing membership and bringing the community together will be on the agenda for Chetwynd’s Métis organization at its annual general meeting.

Scheduled for Sunday, June 28th, the Moccasin Flats Métis Society will hold the gathering at its offices at 102-4612 North Access Road in the District of Chetwynd.

The organization is a wholly recognized charter community by the Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) and has existed for at least two decades, according to the society’s vice-president, Betty Deck.

Deck says having a membership with the society does allow the organization to provide assistance with documentation toward future citizenship within MNBC.

“We have been really busy,” said Deck. “We have held several events for our membership, Métis citizens and the community [throughout 2025 and into 2026].”

“We are encouraging all people who are Métis in the Chetwynd area who would be interested in membership with this society.”

The past year has seen the society host several events, including its Blueberry Apple Festival and pie-making competition last fall.

It also hosted a Louis Riel community dinner in November in honour of the man recognized as the father of the Métis People.

Deck says both events will return in 2026. The society also hosted a youth ‘Safe Space Day’ in February as a response to the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting.

“We held a day at [Chetwynd and Area] recreation centre,” said Deck. “The kids could come and do some crafts, and we brought in dinner. They went to the pool, and they swam.”

“So many [children] were connected through sports, and knew some of those kids who had been affected. [Society president] Le Anne McFeeters organized that day just to give them a place to gather, and to take their minds off it.”

The Moccasin Flats Métis Society’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday, June 21st, at the society’s offices at 5121 47th Ave NW in Chetwynd, starting at 1 p.m.

More information about the society is available on its Facebook page.
