VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Alzheimer Society of British Columbia and IG Wealth Management are teaming up for Canada’s biggest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Northern British Columbia residents are encouraged to join the event and “walk your own way” during the last weekend in May to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society.
A $35,000 commitment to match all donations between March 22nd and April 11th has been made by a generous supporter, meaning participants can double their impact this year.
Supporters have gotten creative with the definition of “walk” by getting active in a way that suits them. That could include cycling, swimming, canoeing, dancing, or doing yoga.
Funds raised from the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s will stay in British Columbia, supporting programs, education, and services in the province.
According to the Alzheimer Society, nearly a million Canadians will have dementia by 2031, an increase of nearly 70 per cent.
Alzheimer Society of B.C. interim CEO Barbara Lindsay says fundraisers like this are needed more than ever.
“As well as raising funds, participants also help raise critical awareness of the impact of dementia in their community. While the 2021 event is different than in past years, it continues to be a way to celebrate and remember people in our lives who have been affected by dementia,” says Lindsay.
Last year, the fundraiser took place online across Canada due to public health restrictions. According to IG Wealth Management, the 2019 event raised over $6.2 million across the country.
