People hope report on Alberta train derailment, fire leads to better rail safety

EDMONTON — People forced to flee their homes west of Edmonton almost two years ago by the fiery explosion of freight train cars are hoping for answers.

The Transportation Safety Board is to release a report today into what caused 13 Canadian National Railway (TSX:CNR) cars to derail near Gainford on Oct. 19, 2013.

Some of the freight cars carrying propane burst into flames, forcing more than 120 people to evacuate for four days.

No one was hurt in the derailment or fire, but the flames damaged some homes.

Former Gainford resident Jeanette Hall says she hopes the TSB report will lead to better rail industry safety.

Rod Shaigec (shag-ess), mayor of Parkland County, says they were fortunate that no one died and he hopes the report will lead to better safety inspections of rail lines.
