CHARLIE LAKE, B.C. — The Charlie Lake Fire Department has received long-awaited new equipment.

According to the Charlie Lake Fire Department, it tested its “brand-new” order of PFA-free turnout equipment during a recent training session.

PFA and PFAs refer to Per and Polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are commonly considered “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the human body.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) say recent studies have shown all three layers of turnout gear contain PFAs.

According to the IAFF, PFAs are linked to serious health effects, including cancer.

The Charlie Lake Fire Department called the new order of the PFA’s free gear a “big milestone” for the department, saying it’s been a “long-time coming” from the initial idea through securing funding, ordering the gear, and finally seeing it delivered.

“We’re thrilled to push this health and safety initiative forward, ensuring our crew has the absolute best protection while they protect our community,” the department said.

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) purchased over $440,000 worth of breathing equipment for the department in October.

In December 2025, the PRRD approved a quote for $155,960 before tax for new personal protective equipment for the department.

The department thanked everyone who helped make the upgrade to PFA’s free gear a reality.
