FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A flower shop in Fort St. John will be closing its doors after six years in the community.

According to a Facebook post on The Flower Hut’s page on July 9, the owner, Tammy Lynn Hordy, said she will be closing her shop due to “avoidable health issues.”

Hordy said she tried to sell the shop, but she did not get any buyers.

“I’ve had some medical issues, my doctor and I are looking into that, which just requires more of my time,” she explained.

“Unfortunately, I was kind of putting my health on the back burner and focusing mostly on the store. I wasn’t getting better that way, so it’s time for me to put a little bit more concern into myself.”

Hordy said she has enjoyed every minute of owning the shop for the last six years and will be sad to see it go.

“Business has its ups and downs, but I’ve met a lot of incredible people in Fort St. John, whether it’s my customers or the people who have come to work here for me,” she said.

For Hordy, her customers have been the highlight of owning the store.

“Over the years, a lot of my customers have become my friends and family,” Hordy said.  I love making donations back into Fort St. John and I have done a lot of that over the years.”

“People bringing my arrangements into their homes, it’s like a part of me being with them.”

Hordy said she will miss all of her customers when she closes.

“I would do a lot of classes within the store and I became very close to so many people, they will stay with me, but I’m gonna miss everybody very much,” she noted.

In preparation for closing, Hordy has been getting the store ready to sell all the items. Starting Friday, July 10, everything in the store is 50 per cent off.

In addition, Hordy is looking for anyone interested in taking over her lease.

“I would like to find someone who’s either looking to expand their business into a bigger space or looking to open up a business that may want to come by and speak with me about the store,” she added.

According to the Facebook post, Hordy will be holding one last floral class during the store’s final celebratory event on July 24, with food and beverages.

“It’ll include your container to make your arrangement in and all the things you need to make it,” she said.

“It’s a really good time for everybody who wants to come in and say goodbye and have one last fun experience with us here.”

Hordy thanked the community for all their support.

“I thank them for making me a stronger person and I appreciate everything they did and I hope that somehow in the future I can touch them again in a different way and I’m always here if people need anything at all.”
