Kenanah, a grade 12 graduate, is a recipient of a SHINE (Soaring High In Education) scholarship for secondary school graduates.

In the statement, the Beedie Luminaries also announced a new directive to support students seeking to pursue a career in medicine.

The Family Practice Medical Degree Award Scholarship will support 33 potential family physicians, each receiving $50,000.

The students are either attending the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) faculty of medicine or Simon Fraser University’s new Stephens Family School of Medicine for the 2026-27 academic year, according to the release.

Ryan Beedie, president and founder of Beedie Luminaries, said the motive to announce a new stream of funding aimed at medical students is to address the province of British Columbia’s lack of family physicians.

“An estimated 1.3 million people in this province lack access to a family physician or another form of primary care,” Beedie is quoted as saying in the release.

“We hope these scholarships help address this crisis, remove barriers for the next generation of family doctors, and ultimately, help build a healthier B.C.”

The addition of a scholarship brings the total of scholarship streams offered by Beedie Luminaries to six.

They include scholarship programs for refugees, single parents, secondary school students, aspiring tradespersons and medical students.

According to the release, 310 students from 34 municipalities provincewide will receive a record combined total of $13 million dollars.

The Beedie Luminaries is a registered foundation and non-profit organization focused on creating brighter futures for aspiring students.

Built on the mission that “higher education can enhance future career opportunities and fundamentally create societal outcomes.”

It was founded by Ryan Beedie back in 2018, with an initial $50 million donation from Beedie.
