Taylor’s council reviews amendments to Unsightly Premises and Maintenance Bylaw

TAYLOR, B.C. — The District of Taylor’s council reviewed the amendments district staff made to a proposed maintenance bylaw.  

During the June 15th District of Taylor committee of the whole meeting, council members discussed the amendments prepared by district staff for the proposed Unsightly Premises and Maintenance Bylaw No. 909, 2026. 

At the committee of the whole meeting, staff presented a report about the Unsightly Premises and Maintenance Bylaw.

The committee asked district staff to explore and present alternative options in the snow removal section of the bylaw. 

According to the report, district staff amended the proposed bylaw to remove the term “neighbouring properties” and add “except for the boulevard abutting their premise or premises.” 

Councillor Betty Ponto said the district’s bylaws are complaint-driven, and questioned whether removing the term “neighbouring property” removes any recourse.

Ryan Galay, the district’s chief administrative officer, said: “There is still recourse, but we don’t have any teeth as the district to enforce it.” 

“It now becomes a civil issue…[it] has nothing to do with us. Leaving that part in allows us as the district to have some teeth to find it through a bylaw process.” 

District staff believe the proposed amendments will “enhance the effectiveness” of the district’s bylaw and support sustainable development.
