FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The North Peace Seniors Housing Society (NPSHS) has received a donation for infrastructure upgrades.

According to a Facebook post on NPSHS’ page on June 15th, the society announced it had received a $60,000 donation from the Surerus Community Support Fund. This donation is separate from the NPSHS radiothon hosted by Moose FM and supported by Smith Fuel Services on June 5th

The NPSHS radiothon, hosted by Moose FM and supported by Smith Fuel Services, as of June 15th, has raised $68,500, which the society will use to fund a new roof for one of its buildings. The society is accepting donations for the NPSHS radiothon until the end of June.

Linda Harvey, the executive director for the society, said: “We put in a proposal to their community support fund to help us with some of the infrastructure expenses we have here, coming up with our ageing buildings, and they very generously accepted our proposal and granted us the funds we requested.”

She said the society will use these funds to replace a make-up air unit in one of the society’s buildings, which costs about $58,000 plus GST.

The make-up air unit is a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system that pulls in outdoor air and conditioned outdoor air to replace indoor air.

Harvey said a donation like this is “huge” for the society.

“It’s one of the most generous donations we’ve received to date and [it] will help us to ensure our buildings are safe, warm and continue to be upkept,” she noted.

“So that our residents can, we can be around for another 40 years, because that’s how long the agency’s [and the buildings have been here.”

Harvey noted there has been an “ever-increasing” need for housing for our seniors, so a donation like this is important.

When asked if she had a message for Surerus, she said: “We would just like to thank Surerus for their incredibly generous donation and for the support they have provided over the years to not only us but to other organizations within the community.”

Anyone who wants to donate to the society can send an EMT to office@npshs.ca or drop by the society’s office at 108th Avenue, open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The society accepts cash, cheques, debit, or credit payments.
