“[At] Mr. Mikes, we like to do stuff for the community. So every year, we [organize] Making Spirits Bright for Christmas, [to] support families who [don’t] have money,” he said. “When [the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation] came to us a couple [of] years back to help support fundraisers, they offered [for] us to do [a] BBQ. So, whatever money we [raise] from the barbecue, we [donate] it back to Fort St. John.”

Tense said this year was “pretty slow” due to the weather, and the BBQ raised $600. Last year, the BBQ raised $2,000 for the hospital foundation.

When asked what motivated Mr. Mikes to participate in Bluey Day, Tense said: “We were looking for a couple of initiatives to do for the community.”

“A lot of people are affected by cancer and they [the foundation] were trying to raise funds for families [that] need more support, I think that was one of the important things…why we were taking part in Bluey Day.”

In addition to this, Mr. Mikes also organizes a Making Spirits Bright initiative during Christmas for the Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society to support two families every year.

Tense said that Mr. Mikes is looking to do other BBQs for the community to raise funds for particular occasions.
