FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The public will have the opportunity to experience hands-on exhibits while learning about the history of northeast B.C. for the 2026 International Museum Day.

The Fort St. John North Peace Museum will be offering free admission from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m on May 16th, 2026, in celebration of International Museum Day.

The Museum will celebrate the event two days earlier, as it is closed on May 18th for Victoria Day.

Heather Sjoblom, manager and curator at the Fort St. John North Peace Museum, explained some of the museum’s offerings.

“We preserve and present the history of Fort St. John and the whole northeast region in British Columbia for the people who live here currently and for future generations,” she said. “We offer educational programs and events, guided tours [of] our exhibits both in the museum and we have a few around town, at the airport and hospital.”

The museum has numerous different exhibits, according to Sjoblom.

“We have several transportation-themed exhibits as well, but we also have medical-themed exhibits, exhibits on business and various minorities who have lived in this area,” said Sjoblom. “We have exhibits on industries such as oil and gas.”

Sjoblom said International Museum Day underscores the importance of recognizing the museum’s work.

“[It] shows the importance of having our work that we do to preserve our communities’ past and highlights some of the work that we do in the community,” she said. “From free events and free admission days to some of the work we do in the background.”

When asked why people should come to the museum to celebrate International Museum Day, Sjoblom said it offers a chance to learn local history while participating in the museum’s interactive activities.

According to Sjoblom, people can support the museum year-round by visiting and paying the admission fee, and by purchasing items from the gift shop.

She also said the museum holds fundraising events, including a yard sale in June and a bottle recycling program.

Memberships are also available at the museum gift shop, which provides free admission for a year.
