DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — A Dawson Creek resident has been fined and handed a multi-year suspension by the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS).

According to an April 15th Facebook post, Conservation Officers stopped a vehicle on the Rocky Creek Forest Service Road near Chetwynd in April 2024. Officers conducted a hunting and fishing compliance inspection of the vehicle’s occupants.

During the stop, the driver of the vehicle failed to produce valid identification, including a drivers license, vehicle insurance and a valid angling license, according to BCCOS.

The BCCOS said the vehicle fled the stop at a high rate of speed. None of the occupants, two adults and one child, were injured.

Travis Ricky Wiebe pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle on a highway without due care and attention and failing to remain stopped in their vehicle for an officer. Wiebe also received a five-year probation order, the BCCOS said in the post.

Wiebe was fined $8,000 for violating the Wildlife Act and Motor Vehicle Act, along with a 2-year angling license suspension.

Angling is a recreational hobby of catching fish using a rod, line and hook, according to the Government of Canada.

The BCCOS reminds the public fleeing from law enforcement is dangerous, illegal, and puts the public and passengers at risk, especially children.
