Two locations in Fort St. John identified for potential measles exposure
Northern Health has warned the community about a potential measles exposure at two location in the Fort St. John area.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Two locations have been identified for a potential measles exposure in the Fort St. John area.Â
According to a Facebook post uploaded on February 27th to the Fort St. John and Area group, a measles exposure notice was issued to the community by Northern Health.Â
- Evangelical Mission Church, 8220 89th Avenue on February 15th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Subway Restaurant, 11127 Alaska Road South on February 23rd from 12 p.m. to 2.30 p.m.
This comes after an overnight measles exposure was reported at the Fort St. John Hospital emergency department from 11:35 p.m. January 17th to 10.10 a.m. January 18th.
The virus spreads through water droplets in the air when an infected person sneezes or even breathes.Â
Northern health is advising the community to monitor for symptoms which can include fever, red/watering eyes, runny nose and dry cough. The symptoms can be followed by a rash that starts on the face and neck and spreads to the chest, arms and legs.Â
People may start experiencing symptoms up to seven to 12 days after exposure.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), people and children who are unvaccinated are most vulnerable. Additionally, measles is a serious disease with one in 10 people being hospitalized with health complications such as pneumonia and inflammation in the brain, sometimes leading to death.
Anyone who thinks they have measles is urged to contact their primary care provider.Â
