Krystal Reid, group commissioner for the 1st South Peace Scouts, told Energeticcity.ca it started collecting trees eight years ago for the city of Dawson Creek.

Reid shared that over the last few years, fewer Christmas trees have been picked up as people are switching to artificial trees.

“But the community is fantastic, they set out their Christmas trees and then the city collects them [from the scouts] and recycles them and uses them in their planters and garden beds in the spring.”

This year, the 1st South Peace Scouts hopes to collect about 125 trees.

She shared: “We will be out on Saturday, so if there are any missed trees on Saturday, we’ll go out for a couple of days [afterwards].”

Trees placed on decks, garages or elsewhere on residential property will not be collected as scout volunteers will not enter private property.

The city advises residents to place the trees on the curb and must be accessible from the roadway.

There is no need to sign up for the collection, people simply must put out their tree at the curb on January 10th by 8 a.m. In case of a missed tree, residents can contact the 1st South Peace Scouts by email – southpeacescouts@gmail.com.
