Police apprehend wanted 25-year-old after break-in

Comox Valley RCMP responded to a break-in report on December 28th at an 83-year-old Courtenay woman’s house.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C.— The Comox Valley RCMP have arrested a wanted man in relation to alleged offences after an 83-year-old woman reported a break-in at her home. 

In a press release, Comox Valley RCMP officers said they responded to a report of a break and enter on December 28th at an 83-year-old Courtenay woman’s house. 

The 83-year-old woman, who was at home during the incident, described the suspect as a masked man wearing dark clothes and sunglasses.

RCMP arrested Matthew Russell McCharles-Carter at approximately 7.30 a.m on that day and he is currently being held in custody. 

This comes after the Comox Valley RCMP announced they were looking for 25-year-old McCharles-Carter, who was wanted in Fort St. John and Comox Valley. 

McCharles-Carter has been charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Sexual assault 
  • Break and enter
  • Unlawful confinement 
  • Assault 
  • Uttering threats 
  • Theft over $5,000
  • Possessing or using a stolen credit card 
  • Possession of property obtained by crime 
  • Disguising his face with intent to commit an offence

The RCMP said the investigation involved extensive work by the major crime unit, frontline officers and assistance from the integrated forensic identification section. 

The press release said: “This outcome reflects the seriousness with which these investigations are handled and the priority placed on victim safety, dignity and offender accountability.”

According to B.C. Court Serve, McCharles-Carter is set to appear in court on January 7th.
