Man charged with murder after shooting in Dawson Creek denied bail

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — The man accused of second-degree murder after a shooting in Dawson Creek this year has been denied bail.
Nolan Douglas Schmidt, 23, who was charged after an incident on January 19th at the Mile Zero Apartment Hotel in Dawson Creek, was denied bail during a BC Supreme Court hearing on Monday, September 15th.
He was arrested on January 20th and charged with second-degree murder, discharge of a firearm with intent to wound, maim or disfigure and aggravated assault.
Justice Baljinder Kaur Girn decided Schmidt would remain in custody as he awaits trial. A ban on the publication of evidence remains until then.
Schmidt’s lawyer proposed he be granted bail, released to a Prince George recovery house and placed on electronic monitoring.
But Girn ruled Schmidt poses a risk to reoffend and reasonable members of the public would lose confidence in the administration of justice if he were granted bail.
Schmidt’s trial is scheduled for June 1st to 26th, 2026.
