DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Clinical staff have had a chance to test out near-final designs for patient rooms at the new Dawson Creek and District Hospital.

According to the latest update on the Dawson Creek and District Hospital replacement project website, in late August, clinical staff were invited to a “mock-up session” testing designs for surgical inpatient and bariatric rooms.

The goal of the mock-up session is for the team building the new hospital — which is expected to be operational by 2027 — to get feedback from workers on issues like where to place hand rails and what kinds of washroom grab bars work best for patients.

“These mock-up sessions are a vital part of our design and construction process, allowing us to refine room layouts based on the input of those who will work in these spaces every day,” the update reads.

“By inviting clinical staff to experience the rooms in-situ and provide feedback, we ensure that every detail is thoughtfully considered.”

The new facility will be over 50 per cent larger than the city’s current hospital, with 24 additional beds for patients, five new treatment spaces in its emergency department and more.

As of the latest construction update in August, the exterior of the building is on track to be complete this fall, and the hospital is still on track to be open by the spring of 2027.
