‘Be aware’: Warning issued after moose spotted in Fort St. John

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A warning has been issued after a moose was spotted in Fort St. John.

According to a Facebook post by the City of Fort St. John, the moose was reportedly seen in the Fish Creek Community Forest behind Northern Lights College.

The city has issued a wildlife alert, reminding people to stay alert and use caution when in the area, including making noise or travelling in groups to avoid surprising wildlife.

Residents are also advised to steer clear of an animal’s feeding site and to watch for signs of changes in behaviour, which may indicate they are too close.

The city also shared safety reminders for bear encounters: do not run, but instead speak calmly and firmly, try to appear larger and back away slowly.

If a bear becomes aggressive, people are advised to throw objects and, if attacked, fight back.
