‘Vehicle incident’ closes Alaska Highway near Fort St. John

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A portion of the Alaska Highway is currently closed following a “vehicle incident.”

According to DriveBC, Highway 97 is closed one kilometre north of Fort St. John at its intersection with 269 Road.

Witnesses report the incident involved a “tanker truck” and another vehicle, although this has not been confirmed.

The closure began at 2:07 p.m. on Monday, August 11th. Dawson Road Maintenance in the North Peace has said an assessment is in progress at the intersection between 269 Road and Highway 97, with detours being put in place.

DriveBC confirmed the detour southbound is via 271 Road, 242 Road and Old Fort Road. The alternative northbound route is via Clairmont Frontage Road, 269 Road, 244 Road and 271 Road. 

Motorists are being warned to expect delays in the area due to congestion.
