FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A Swiss trading organization has signed an agreement with AltaGas to trade butane that will go on to be used in feedstock for central Asia.

According to a press release issued July 23rd, BASF Intertrade AG — an organization based out of Switzerland that specializes in the trade of petroleum and related products — will receive butane from an AltaGas facility currently being built on Ridley Island, B.C.

The agreement begins in 2027, and BASF hopes to leverage the resources provided by AltaGas to expand its Asian production footprint.

“This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening BASF’s global feedstock supply portfolio,” says Matthias Dohrn, president of global procurement at BASF.

“By partnering with AltaGas, we are not only securing reliable and competitive access to butane from western Canada, but also reinforcing our commitment to supply chain diversification and resilience.

“AltaGas brings expertise and a strong infrastructure platform to the table, and we look forward to our collaboration to support our growth in Asia.”

Meanwhile, for AltaGas, this deal reportedly helps to “de-risk” its global export operations by expanding its customer base.

“We are excited to deepen our relationship with BASF and play a key role in helping the company deliver on their long-term growth objectives,” said Vern Yu, president and chief executive officer of AltaGas.

“This agreement is further recognition of our structural advantage of exporting liquified petroleum gas to Asia from the North American west coast.”

This news comes after AltaGas reported a strong start to 2025 backed in part by improvements in northeast British Columbia.
