Regional district extends eco-monitoring contract of Peace region landfills

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The regional district has extended a contract for environmental monitoring of landfills in the Peace River region. 

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) regional board of directors approved an increase and extension to an environmental monitoring and reporting contract during the July 17th board meeting. 

The Environmental Monitoring and Reporting contract between the PRRD and Montrose Environmental, formerly Matrix Solutions, has been ongoing since 2023, and was expected to continue until March 31st, 2026.

However, during the July meeting, the board approved a one-year extension, increasing the contract’s cost to $802,985.75 and its total lifespan to four years. 

The district initially entered into a three-year contract with Matrix Solutions on April 1st, 2023 for $467,985.75.

Since the contract began, the company has increased its activities in the region, resulting in an additional $355,000 in contract costs in 2025.

Montrose monitors ground water, surface water and landfill gas across three active and five closed landfills in the region for the PRRD.
