FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — After six years of work, a new clinic will open in Fort St. John to provide critical healthcare services for people or families without quick access.

In a July 7th press release, the Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society (FSJWRS) announced the launch of a free nurse practitioner drop-in clinic for low-income people.

The clinic offers health advice, non-urgent medical care for low-income individuals earning less than $42,000 per year, women’s health services and more.

“This clinic is the result of more than six years of effort and advocacy,” said Amanda Trotter, executive director of FSJWRS.

“We’ve listened to our clients and we knew this kind of accessible care was urgently needed.”

Estefania Albornoz, manager of fundraising and community engagement with FSJWRS, said the new initiative is made to help its existing low-income clients, but more can apply for help by submitting proof of their income status, such as 10 months of bank statements or a T4 from the previous year.

“If there’s someone that is new and have never accessed our services before and they’re low income, they can come,” said Albornoz.

Described as the first of its kind in northern B.C., the clinic is being done in partnership with the North Peace Division of Family Practice and the North Peace Primary Care Network.

“Through this partnership, we are expanding access to health services in Fort St. John for

those who need it most,” Melinda Whitford, team lead with Northern Health.

“Our nurse practitioners are here to offer support, assessments and a range of women’s and general health services in a way that is respectful and accessible to people of all genders.”

The clinic will take place every Tuesday at FSJWRS’ Healing Place, starting on July 8th at 11 a.m.

“It’s been years in the making, and thanks to the commitment of our partners, it’s finally a reality,” said Trotter.

“We’re proud to offer this essential service in a safe and welcoming environment.”

The FSJWRS’ Healing Place building is at 9912 96th Avenue.

Anyone wanting more information on the clinic can contact the FSJWRS health team at 250-224-6170.
