Rain and smoke warning issued for Fort Nelson area
Environment Canada is warning the northern B.C. region of heavy rainfall and wildfire smoke on July 3rd and a possibility of flash floods.

FORT NELSON, B.C. — Heavy rain and wildfire smoke is expected in the Peace region and other areas of northeastern B.C. with the possibility of flash floods.Â
Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning on July 3rd for northeastern B.C., including Fort Nelson and surrounding areas, advising residents that a 40 mm to 60 mm of water may accumulate during the downpour.Â
“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” said Environment Canada. “Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

A further 20 mm to 30 mm of rain is possible before conditions are predicted to improve in the evening.Â
The agency also issued a special air quality statement on July 3rd due to wildfire smoke.Â
Environment Canada said the northeastern region could be impacted by the smoke for up to two days.Â
Mild symptoms caused by smoke exposure include eye, nose or throat irritation, as well as headaches and a mild cough.Â

“As smoke levels increase, health risks increase,” the agency advised.Â
“Limit time outdoors, consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.”Â
Other more serious symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.Â
