Kwokwollie Lake wildfire extinguished, Petito River blaze merged
The Kwokwollie Lake wildfire in the Fort Nelson zone has been extinguished and the Petito River blaze has merged with the Etcho Creek fire, according to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

FORT NELSON, B.C. — Wildfires in the Fort Nelson zone have been extinguished or merged with other blazes, according to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).
The latest update to BCWS’ website shows the wildfire near Kwokwollie Lake is no longer burning.
The Kwokwollie Lake fire was believed to have been caused by a lightning strike during this wildfire season, and was discovered on June 9th.
Per BCWS’ website, it was declared extinguished on Thursday, June 26th, shortly before noon. Prior to that, it had burned 786 hectares.
Meanwhile, the Petito River blaze – an overwintering fire from a previous wildfire season – was first found to have reignited on May 7th.
As recently as Friday, June 27th, BCWS had reported the fire was growing, burning 11,216 hectares at its peak.
It was declared ‘out’ on Monday, June 30th, shortly after noon, on the BCWS website. However, the service says it has actually merged with the Etcho Creek wildfire, which grew significantly over the weekend and has now burned 234,657 hectares so far.
