GOODLOW, B.C. — An area restriction is now in effect near the Alces River due to a wildfire in the area.

The Goodlow blaze had burned 1,851 hectares as of the latest update from the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) on June 6th at 6:30 p.m.

The BCWS’ Prince George Fire Centre implemented the area restriction as of 9 p.m. on June 6th.

The restriction applies to Crown land within four geographic corners:

  • 56° 33.418’N, 120° 0.003’W
  • 56° 27.488’N, 120° 0.014’W
  • 56° 27.422’N, 120° 19.097’W
  • 56° 33.393’N, 120° 19.124’W

“The size of the area restriction reflects the continued need to protect the public in areas where there are ongoing fire suppression activities and hazardous fire behaviour conditions,” said BCWS.

People must not remain in or enter the restricted area without prior written authorization.

However, there are exemptions for those travelling to or from their home, using a highway as per the Transportation Act or entering as an official, to support the firefighting efforts or to do industrial activity at a regulated oil and gas site.

Anyone caught violating this restriction could be slapped with a ticket of $1,150.

It remains in place until October 15th, unless it is rescinded earlier.

This comes after the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) issued an evacuation alert for the same Goodlow fire.
