1,877-hectare wildfire reignites north of Fort Nelson

A reignited holdover wildfire northwest of Fort Nelson near Etset Lake has already burned nearly 2,000 hectares.

FORT NELSON, B.C. — A reignited holdover wildfire northwest of Fort Nelson has already burned nearly 2,000 hectares.

According to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the blaze is located near Etset Lake, and is currently listed as ‘out of control’ after burning 1,877 hectares.

The fire was reportedly found this year on Monday, May 12th, burning within the perimeter of a fire from last year. The current suspected cause of the fire is listed as a lightning strike.

No area restrictions or evacuations have been ordered as a result of the blaze, and the BCWS website says suppression work is underway to limit its spread.

This is the largest of a number of holdover fires the BCWS is “closely monitoring” in the Fort Nelson region.

For example, a holdover fire south of the Kiwigana River has grown to 196.96 hectares and another in Klenteh Creek is 38 hectares.
