The local taxi company announced on Friday, March 21st an application to add another wheelchair-accessible cab to its fleet had been approved.

“We applied to the Passenger Transportation Board in August 2024 [to add] two additional wheelchair-accessible cabs into our fleet, and got approval for one vehicle out of two,” the announcement –  written by company owner Sunpreet Singh – reads.

When contacted for clarification, Singh explained another company in the city had a licence to operate a wheelchair-accessible taxi cab, but hadn’t operated one for several years.

He also said his company only received approval to operate one additional cab for now, to avoid negatively impacting the business of Super Cabs, a competing company.

However, according to Singh, if the demand for wheelchair-accessible cabs is high enough, the board will reconsider his application for a licence to operate a second.

Singh is thanking members of the Fort St. John community for their support, as well as Mayor Lilia Hansen and councillor Trevor Bolin for submitting letters of support to the Passenger Transportation Board vouching for Energetic Taxi Cab’s application.

The new wheelchair-accessible taxi is expected to be on the roads in Fort St. John in roughly one month, after it has been taken to Vancouver and had a wheelchair ramp installed.
