‘Small subset’ of Fort St. John data stolen in city cyber hack

A “small subset” of data was stolen from the City of Fort St John in last week’s cyber hack, it has been confirmed.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A “small subset” of data was stolen from the City of Fort St John in last week’s cyber hack, it has been confirmed. 

On Tuesday, February 25th, the City of Fort St. John revealed it was dealing with a “cyber incident” which was “severely impacting” services such as emails and phone calls. 

The city issued a press release on March 6th revealing an “unauthorized third party” has stolen a “small subset” of data.

“We are currently reviewing and validating the subset of data involved to determine what, if any, sensitive personal information was affected,” says the release. 

Over 75 percent of front-facing services have now been restored since the cyber hack, the city said, with other services expected to be back online “in the next few days.”

The city says it will notify anyone who may have had their sensitive personal information stolen.

As the investigation continues, the city will continue working with relevant authorities.

However, the city says it must be sensitive regarding what information is shared.

The City of Fort St. John also established a webpage about the cyber hack where updated information is available.
