FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — At the beginning of next month, town residents may get over their football hangover with the phrase “Are you ready for some dodgeball?”

The city’s annual dodgeball tournament is slated to occur on March 1st. Fort St. John recreational programmer David Green says details of the tournament have been finalized, with 20 teams signed up.

Although there is a waiting list for entrants, they might not be able to participate.

Just like the 2004 Ben Stiller comedy “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” this event will be for adults only.

“It can definitely get competitive,” said Green. “There’s some teams that have won it multiple times.”

“Fort St. John is a small town,  so you always know some of the players and it’s a good time.”

A team will consist of at least six players, with roster spots available for as many as eight. The session will involve a best-of-three-game series between teams with a 10-minute time limit.

Teams will receive a point for a game win, three points for a two-game sweep, and an additional point for a shutout, in which an opponent is unable to get anyone out.

Prizes will be awarded for the day-long tournament for the best dressed, most sportsmanlike and most enthusiastic teams.

“We just have to kind of get after people that are treating it a little too intense. [But overall], we try to run a fun event,” said Green.

The North Peace Gymnastics Association (NPGA) will co-host, and also be on hand for a beer garden and a 50/50 draw.

Half the proceeds of the event will go towards NPGA’s fundraising efforts for their season.

Teams are encouraged to be co-ed, although it is not a requirement, and fees are $150 per team.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, March 1st from 11:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Kid’s Arena Fieldhouse on 9615 96th Avenue.

More information about the tournament is available on the city’s event website.
