Flyers fall short after late rally against Athletics, face Jets next on Jan 11

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Senior Flyers mini-winning streak is now history, as they fell on the road against the Grande Prairie Athletics on January 9th. 

After downing the High Prairie Regals in their previous contest, Aiden Craig-Steele looked to keep the momentum going for the Flyers, scoring early to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Grande Prairie replied with an equalizer from Ryan Norton just over a minute later.  They then took the lead on a goal by Dawson Blanchette, making the score 2-1 after 20 minutes.

With Fort St. John battling penalty issues, the Athletics took advantage with a pair of man advantages in the second period, with goals by Keaton Mercredi and Bailey Hartman. 

Parker Sharp’s fourth goal of the year gave the hosts a comfortable 5-1 lead before the Flyers rallied in the third.

Chase Hipkiss started things, but Sharp’s second goal of the contest made the score 6-2 early in the final period.

Devan Greyeyes had a power play goal midway through the frame, and Craig-Steele scored his second goal of the game for the Flyers around four minutes later.

Although Cayle Bell scored late in the third, the comeback bid fell short, as Fort St. John fell 6-5.

Still sitting in fourth place in the North Peace Hockey League’s Western Division, the Flyers’ next game sees the team heading to Valleyview on January 11th to take on the Jets.

Game time is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at the Polar Palace Hockey Arena.
