FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Ahead of its plans to close Fort St. John’s sawmill, Canfor is preparing to host a quarterly earnings report.

The forestry company announced in early September its plans to close the mill alongside another facility in Vanderhoof, directly impacting roughly 500 jobs, including 220 in Fort St. John.

The company cited factors such as high costs and challenges in acquiring economic fibre that led to millions of dollars in losses as the reason for its decision to close the facilities.

The decision drew criticism from local politicians and the union representing hundreds of at-risk employees.

Later in September, Brink Forest Products, a company based in Prince George, announced that it had submitted a bid to buy the two mills.

Canfor’s third-quarter financial and operating results report is scheduled for Monday, October 28th.
