175,000 students to participate in “Student Vote” program ahead of provincial election

As many as 175,000 elementary and secondary students are expected to cast student vote ballots throughout the province in the leadup to this week’s provincial election.

VANCOUVER, B.C. — As many as 175,000 elementary and secondary students are expected to cast student vote ballots throughout the province in the leadup to this week’s provincial election.

According to Student Vote British Columbia 2024, over 1,200 schools have registered to participate in British Columbia’s largest provincial Student Vote program to date across all 93 electoral districts.

After voting is finished, the results, including the popular vote for each party, results by electoral district, and individual school tallies, will be released to the public.

The data, as well as student testimonials, will answer questions about students’ outlooks on the state of society and whether there are differences compared to their parents’ generations.

Student Vote is an experiential civic literacy program providing the opportunity for students to cast ballots in a parallel mock election and practice the habits of informed citizens. 

Participating schools received non-partisan educational materials to teach about government and election processes.

Students are encouraged to research the candidates and issues concerning the province. Ballots and voting screens were also provided.

Meanwhile, in the actual provincial election, advance voting has already begun and will continue until October 16th. 

The provincial election voting day will happen on October 19th.
