UPDATE: Extreme flooding erodes Highway 97 north of Fort Nelson

UPDATE as of 9 p.m. on July 24, 2024 – The Alaska Highway is open near KM 624.  The highway is open to single-lane alternating traffic. Obey signs and traffic control personnel. The next update time is on Thursday, Jul 25, at 8:00 PM MST.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A section of Highway 97 north of Fort Nelson remains closed due to extreme flooding and erosion of the roadway.

Drive BC has issued an update for Highway 97 between 115 Creek Campground and Callison Road, approximately 167 kilometres north of Fort Nelson.

A section of the road near kilometre 624 has been eroded due to substantial flooding over the past 24-48 hours.

Images posted to Facebook of the area show construction crews using heavy machinery to carve a temporary path on the road’s shoulder.

On July 23rd, the area was closed to traffic in both directions and re-opened to single-lane alternating traffic by the end of the day.

The road is now closed at 624 kilometres, with an update scheduled for 3 p.m. July 24th.
