In April of 2024, we here at Energeticcity.ca ran the North Peace People’s Choice Awards. With these awards, the people of the North Peace region voted on who was the best of the best in a wide variety of categories. You can find the full list here, but we wanted to share some of the winners and runner-ups in specific categories to help showcase the awesome businesses and organizations that make our region a great place to live.

In this article, we are showcasing some of the best sports & fitness options available throughout the North Peace Region. Below you will find options for all age ranges to get active. Plus, even if you are just looking to watch, we included the Best Sports Event to look forward to.

If you’re looking for a new gym, Prevail Athletics was voted the Best Fitness Facility in the region. According to Co-owner and General Manager Caitlyn Bellamy, Prevail Athletics is a full-service fitness facility. They offer a co-ed and women’s only gym, group fitness classes including FSJ’s only hot yoga studio, tanning, child care, saunas and supplements. Prevail is open 7 days a week and fully staffed from 5 AM-11 PM Monday-Friday, 7 AM-11 PM Saturday and 7 AM-8 PM Sunday. Prevail Athletics’ friendly and hardworking staff will always ensure the gym is kept in tip-top shape, and you are welcomed at the door with a smile.

Best Golf Course: Lakepoint Golf & Country Club

Located on Charlie Lake, Lakepoint Golf & Country Club offers a picturesque experience for golfers of all ages. According to the team at the country club, Lakepoint offers a number of different sports programs, including Ladies Night, the Ernies Sports Experts Junior Program, and private lesson programs. Each program caters to different categories of golfers, with private lesson programs being open to anybody and everybody of all golf abilities. They continue that Ladies Nights has gained a lot of traction since the beginning of the season, seeing over 100 ladies at their last Themed Scramble. Ladies can join them every Tuesday at 6 PM. The Junior Program is a fantastic sports program option, free of charge for juniors up to 18 years of age. Lakepoint saw about 60 participants last season and expects to have about 80 this year. The program kicks off every July.

Best Sports Event: The Crystal Cup Pond Hockey Tournament

Every February on Charlie Lake, BC

As we are located in Northern Canada, it’s no surprise that the region’s favourite sports event is a hockey tournament. The Crystal Cup Pond Hockey Tournament and Sid Davis Youth Memorial Challenge see multiple teams of all ages compete to be the champions. Taking place in February every year when able, participants face not only other competitors but sometimes even the weather, but a good time is always had. Plus, organizers have expanded festivities over the last couple of years to provide even more fun for viewers. Organizer Neil Evans would like to thank everyone for voting for them as the Best Sports Event as well as all of their volunteers, sponsors, and the other organizers for making it a great event. The next Crystal Cup is slated for February 21-23, 2025.

Best Swimming Pool: North Peace Leisure Pool

Although it’s located in Fort St John, the North Peace Leisure Pool is used and enjoyed by residents from all over the Peace River Regional District. The Leisure Pool offers a great option whether you are trying to beat the heat in the summer or get some exercise during our long winters. According to Pool Aquatics Programmer Paola Banks, they always have fun activities for all ages such as Aquafit, FloatFit HIIT, Aqua Spin, Aqua Stretch, and more.

Best Youth Fitness/Sports Program: Fort St John Minor Hockey Association

As with most Canadian cities, hockey plays a big part in our community. The Fort St John Minor Hockey Association coordinates a bunch of leagues from U5 to U18. They also offer development opportunities, rec leagues, and more.
