One dead, several injured after Sikanni River Bridge collision

At least one person has passed away and an unknown number of others are injured after a collision north of Wonowon Wednesday.

WONOWON, B.C. — At least one person has passed away and an unknown number of others are injured after a collision north of Wonowon Wednesday.

According to BC Highway Patrol Corporal Melissa Jongema, police officers were informed of the collision just after 6:00 a.m.

“At 6:06 in the morning, BC Highway Patrol received a report of a collision on Highway 97 at a construction site at the Sikanni River Bridge,” Jongema explains.

“Police located a two-vehicle collision where a pickup truck had been rear-ended by a second pickup truck. The driver in the pickup truck that was rear-ended has passed away, and the passenger has been transported to hospital.”

Jongema says the driver of the second pickup truck, who is suspected to have been impaired, was also injured in the collision.

Highway 97 has been shut down for investigation since the collision occurred.

Jongema also says initial reports indicate some number of other workers at the construction site were injured as a result of the crash, but the number of injured people is currently unknown.
