FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John and District Kennel Club will kick off its showing season on May 17th at Taylor District Ice Centre.

The Taylor show, the first of the dog-showing season in the North Peace region, has been held for more than 25 years. This year, it will feature more than 170 different types of dogs.

The four-day show begins at 8 a.m. on May 17th and will continue until the evening of May 20th, featuring eight all-breed shows.

Donna Fox, president of the club, says this year’s show differs slightly from previous years.

“We don’t really advertise it, so people don’t know, but I just thought with all the evacuees in town, they probably might want something to do over the weekend,” Fox said.

Attendees are welcome to wander the event and speak with the show participants but cannot bring their own four-legged companions to the show and must be respectful of show-attending dogs and their owners.

“If [the owners] have groomed a dog to go in the ring, they don’t want anyone messing up its hair, especially a breed like a poodle, because they take hours and hours to groom,” Fox explained.

The four-day event is free for attendees. Concession stands and vendors are open throughout, and there is an outdoor playground for younger attendees outside the centre.
