Fort St. John council supports Mayor Hansen taking a leave of absence following personal loss

FORT ST. JOHN — Fort St. John council has permitted Mayor Lilia Hansen, through a council survey poll, to take a leave of absence after a personal loss.
At a council meeting on March 25th, Acting Mayor Gord Klassen, with permission from Hansen, announced that her mother had passed away.
The Community Charter states that support from council is required to allow a member to be absent from meetings for 60 consecutive days or four consecutive meetings.
At the meeting, council ratified a survey council poll conducted by email on March 15th, granting the mayor permission to miss more than the stipulated time.
“Although personal circumstances are such that Mayor Hansen may miss four regular council meetings, she remains engaged with the community and involved with council duties,” said in a request for decision.
It’s unclear when Hansen will return to council meetings at this time.
