DAWSON CREEK, B.C — The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) board issued a letter of support to AutismBC, which is seeking $10,000 in grant funding from the BC Hydro GO Fund, at their March 7th meeting.

The grant funding would be used to expand programs for people on the autism spectrum in the Peace region. The non-profit would also offer community support groups, community events, and information sessions in B.C.

The initial deadline for the application was March 6th. However, staff reached out to BC Hydro and was told an extension would be given if a letter of support was granted.

Fort St. John Mayor Lilia Hansen requested to defer the letter, saying she could not give her support and would prefer the funds to go to more local groups.

“I can’t support someone who I don’t know and who does not work actively in my community,”  said Hansen.

With a different point of view, Travous Quibell, mayor of Hudson’s Hope, said families in his community would benefit greatly from the funding.

“More service is always better than less when it comes to supporting families of children with autism,” said Quibell.

Northern Development Initiative Trust administers the Go Fund on behalf of BC Hydro and will determine if AutismBC will be granted the funding at a future date.
