FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — D&D Insulators and the City of Fort St. John recently donated a storage box to the local skateboarding community for their equipment.
Skateboard enthusiast Cole Andrews says the relationship between skateboarders and the city has continued to improve, and the donation of the storage box proves that.
Darren Peebles of D&D Insulators built the storage box, which is located within the Pomeroy Sport Centre in a space designated by the city.
“Previously, we’ve had to haul the equipment in and out every time we went there, and it was just getting to be a real drag,” Andrews said.
“It just shows that the city sees the benefit of these kinds of alternate programs at the Pomeroy Sport Centre — It’s nice to see that they’re expanding their horizons.”
Andrews helps host “skateboarding nights” at the Pomeroy Sport Centre on Tuesdays and Sundays at 5 p.m., which typically sees 10 to 15 participants.
For insurance reasons, the event is only open to skateboarders 12 and older, but Andrews hopes to host specific programs for younger kids in the future.

Andrews added adults are always welcome to attend skateboarding nights, as people from “age 12 to 53” show up.
Andrews thanked the city and Darren Peebles for the storage box, which takes a burden off those running the nights to haul equipment in and out of the facility.
He also thanks Heidi Avanthay for advocating for the skateboarders behind the scenes.
