FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) is asking the public to take prevention measures and seek care after receiving two reports of influenza-associated deaths among children.

Both deaths occurred in B.C. within the last two weeks, and according to a release from the BCCDC, are the only two flu-related deaths in children the organization is aware of to date during this respiratory season.

The release states early findings indicate the two children experienced secondary bacterial infections contributing to severe illness, which can be a complication of influenza.

The organization says the province is experiencing increased flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) activity, similar to levels experienced before the pandemic.

Flu activity has been the highest in children since the start of this respiratory season, and the BCCDC is reminding families to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of serious illness.

The organization believes the best way to prevent serious illness is by getting a flu vaccine and says this year’s vaccine appears to be well-matched to the flu viruses circulating in B.C.

The BCCDC says vaccination is particularly important for children who are at a high risk of severe outcomes from the flu.

According to the BCCDC, there are a number of steps families can take to reduce their risk of serious infection from respiratory viruses and prevent others from becoming ill.

The organization recommends getting immunized, staying home if feeling unwell, wearing a mask when in public while sick, coughing and sneezing into the elbow, cleaning hands regularly, avoiding touching the face, and avoiding people who are at high risk for serious illness.
