FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The hospitals in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek may face intermittent service interruptions in the coming days due to staffing challenges.

Northern Health says there may be intermittent service interruptions at the Fort St. John Hospital’s Birthing Centre due to a shortage of maternity and operating nurses. Possible maternity service interruptions at the Dawson Creek Hospital will be due to the availability of anesthesia support.

According to Northern Health, efforts are being made to prevent interruptions to labour and delivery services at both hospitals. This includes coordinating staffing so services remain at the site if interruptions occur at other hospitals.

Northern Health has communicated directly with patients who may be impacted, offered support with accommodations in Dawson Creek and ensured all area hospitals and workers in patient transport are notified.

The health authority says they recognize the potential need for maternity patients to travel to give birth can be inconvenient.  However, safety comes first by ensuring they have access to a facility with the necessary resources and operating room.
