FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — City council has directed staff to research and provide options for expanding bylaw provisions for unsafe premises.

The decision comes after multiple incidents, including gunfire, have been linked to a residence near Triangle Park in Fort St. John.

During Tuesday’s council meeting, Fort St. John Mayor Lilia Hansen said investigating options for unsafe premises was a “timely” matter.

“It’s being responsive, listening to our residents as to what’s important,” said Mayor Hansen.

Earlier this month, residents living in the Triangle Park area voiced safety concerns on social media surrounding the house in question following shots fired into a neighbouring home.

This took place after four suspects were arrested in August and charged with breaking into the residence and firing shots into the home.

Prior to council’s direction to staff, the City of Fort St. John and local RCMP said they are seeking solutions, including targeted enforcement, provincial civil forfeiture, and bylaws.
