FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Construction on 89th Avenue has finished for the season, and the street has reopened to the public, according to the City of Fort St. John.
Work on the project started on August 1st between 78a Street and 81a Street and included replacing underground utilities, reconstructing the road, and installing sidewalks and streetlights over several phases.
The project was supposed to be completed by the early fall, but according to Ryan Harvey with the city, a few different factors contributed to delays.

One of the issues that arose when replacing underground utilities was the discovery of an unknown asbestos concrete pipe, which needed to be removed.
“That takes a little more time because of the safety precautions,” Harvey said.
Other issues impeding construction on 89th Avenue included material shortages and staffing challenges in the construction industry.
With the snow on the ground, Harvey said crews are stopping construction until the spring.Â

Harvey said the city understands the frustration that arises from projects such as the one on 89th Avenue disrupting people’s lives.
“Unfortunately, the work is necessary to make sure that when people turn on their water in the morning, they still have water,” Harvey said.
“So certainly a necessary evil, and we appreciate [residents’] patience while this is happening.”
He added knowing what they know now from the first phase of the project will help the plans for next year.
The city is still deciding if the contractor will face penalties for the delayed work, said Harvey.
