Fort St. John Elks invite community to Speed Skate with an Olympian

On Monday, November 13th, the Elks are inviting community members to head to the oval at the Pomeroy Sport Centre to Speed Skate with an Olympian.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Elks Speed Skating Club is hosting two events in celebration of Speed Skating Week, including a skating session with an Olympian. 

Last month, Fort St. John City Council proclaimed the week of November 12th to 18th as Speed Skating Week and will raise the club’s flag outside city hall for the duration of the week. 

On Monday, November 13th, the Elks are inviting community members to head to the oval at the Pomeroy Sport Centre to Speed Skate with an Olympian.

Elks alumni and Olympic medalist Denny Morrison will be present to share his love of speed skating with attendees of all ages. 

The event will feature activities for skaters and non-skaters and will offer light refreshments as well. Skaters are encouraged to bring their own skating gear. 

Speed Skate with an Olympian is free to attend and will take place from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

On Wednesday, November 15th, the Elks are hosting a volunteer appreciation evening at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre. 

The event will recognize almost 100 coaches, officials and volunteers who have played a huge part in the club’s success since its establishment in 1964. 

The volunteer appreciation evening will include a virtual presentation from Denny Morrison and remarks from local dignitaries.

The event begins at 7 p.m. and is by invitation only.

Recent graduate of BCIT’s Broadcast and Online Journalism program, born and raised in Vancouver, Jordan’s passion for broadcast and journalism began with her dream of becoming a hockey journalist and play-by-play commentator.

During her schooling, Jordan discovered a deep passion for reporting on Indigenous issues, culture and affairs. Jordan is also passionate about connecting with and listening to stories from people from different walks of life and cultural backgrounds.

Last Spring, Jordan completed her first season providing play-by-play for Trinity Western University Women’s Hockey and gameday hosting for BCHL Coquitlam Express.

Jordan enjoys radio anchoring, creating and editing video content, and hopes to one day pursue a career in investigative journalism as well as producing documentaries.
