NLC trades students show off their skills

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Six Northern Lights College (NLC) trades students attended the provincial Skills Canada event on Wednesday, and four brought home some hardware.

After the regional competition in March, Laura Kohan, Ryan Buerge, Tyson Nielson, Kaylea Mould, Jasmeet Kaur and Samuel Sawatsky headed to the Abbotsford Trade and Exhibition Centre to compete on the provincial level.

Mould received gold for aesthetics, Sawatsky earned silver for welding, Tyson Nielson took home bronze for electrical wiring and Kohan tied for bronze in aerospace.

Skills Canada helps students prepare for chosen skilled careers through competitions, in-school programs, online challenges and young women’s conferences, according to Skills Canada BC.

In each competition, each student is given a set of blueprints or a plan, materials and a set amount of time to complete the task.

The competitions were in skilled trades careers such as carpentry, hairstyling, video production and welding.

Students who won gold at provincials will travel to Winnipeg for the national competition in May. Competitors who win at nationals will have the opportunity to compete in France next year while representing the WorldSkills Canada team.
