Rishav Sharma aims to help grow badminton community in FSJ

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Rishav Sharma is looking to use badminton knowledge and experiences to help grow the sport in Fort St. John.

Sharma created the Peace Region Badminton Club in 2019 for kids after noticing there was no opportunity for them to play the sport outside of school.

Right now, he teaches around 35 kids.

“My goal is to develop the badminton community and make the badminton club a little bigger, so more of a variety of players can come,” said Sharma.

With so many people coming to Fort St. John for work, Sharma says there is also an opportunity to make his club a destination for adults wanting to find a place to play badminton.

Sharma would like to bring a badminton-focused facility to the city so he can train five days a week. Right now, he says the club only trains two to three times a week at school gyms in the city.

Sharma is definitely qualified to teach budding badminton players, having competed in different tournaments around the world.

Sharma recently competed in the 2022 Para Badminton International event in Brazil.

He finished the event 1-2 in singles play, and 0-2 in doubles, with partner Cicero Lima Liberal of Brazil.

Sharma said the tournament was a huge learning experience for him, competing and watching athletes from all over the world.

As for the outcome of the event, Sharma says he isn’t disappointed and realized what he needs to work on going forward.

“I tried my best to keep myself in the shape so at least I can go and perform,” said Sharma, noting he only had limited practice sessions before competing in Sao Paulo.

He was among eight players representing Canada in the tournament.

Sharma is originally from India but started playing in tournaments when he moved to Fort St. John in 2016 and has only represented Canada.

“It’s a nice feeling to represent a good country,” said Sharma.

“It’s a lot of pressure and responsibility when you go play against high-level players.”

He has been playing badminton since 2011 and moved to Fort St. John to study business management at Northern Lights College.

Representing Fort St. John, Sharma also won gold at the B.C. Provincial Para-Badminton Championships in 2017.

Sharma would like to send a thank you to the community and sponsors.
